I'm off to EA!

I wasn't quite sure the day would ever come, but now here it is -- I've said goodbye to Future US after almost 10 years, and I've taken a new position at Electronic Arts as director of media strategy and development.

First thing's first -- new contact email is danielrimorris at gmail. Use it for good, not evil.

Before I get into the new gig, it's worth putting down some thoughts about my time at Future (and, before its name change, Imagine Media). I was hired at Imagine in early 1999 at the tender age of 23, to be deputy editor on PC Gamer. My first few years there were a carnival, to say the least...it's hard to adequately describe life at a company where you review videogames, write stories for a magazine with pathologically-obsessive readers, travel the world, ignore all the standards of corporate workplace etiquette, and work long hours with a hilarious pack of like-minded nerds who are all gifted in one way or another with sprinkles of greatness. As Henry Hill says, "it was a glorious time."

In more recent years, after a few promotions and a move to the business side of the business, the job became something different, but equally rewarding -- a taste of media empire-building. Which, it turns out, I really enjoy too...so now it's off to EA to help them gin up new ways to reach gamers in the emerging digital world.

For a good sense of what I'm going to be doing, read this brief article on EA Games president Frank Gibeau -- the strategy he describes is basically going to be my job description. It's a huge opportunity and I intend to make the most of it.

So...if you're a Futurian (or ex-Imagineer), thanks for a decade's worth of memories. For everyone else, wish me luck in a big new job at one of the biggest entertainment companies in the world. It's going to be an adventure...

As a former Imagineer and a current staffer at EA, I join you in the fond remembrances of Brisbane and welcome you to Redwood Shores. Congratulations!

EA! Congratulations. I'd guess that I've been playing there games for at least half of my life. Sounds exciting. With advances in sensory controls and ever increasing processing power innovation in gaming is inevitable. I look forward to more interactive games with less traditional controls. Exercise games that could make keeping in shape bearable by providing virtual compitition while you work out on a treadmill or bike or shadowboxing. Ultimately I think we'll wind up with some sort of gaming room where you'll walk into a sphere that can rotate with you're movement in any direction, indicating speed and direction. with a system that tracks the suttle movements of every limb and a virtual display all around. Now that would be dope.
Good luck on you're journey.

Wow EA! That's awesome, very glad to hear it.

So here's a question, I'll be down in the Bay for this year's Showdown LAN, will you be there? I'd be killer to see you.

Andy -- I'm around that weekend, let's definitely hook up.

Congrats on the move to EA! I can almost say that I've grown up with EA, and they continue to be a go to publisher whenever I'm looking for a new fix.

First thing on your list?...Now about that nasty DRM and Spore issue...

;)
